Advantages of the Patented Rotor Foam Method
(Translation)
Dr. Hermann Hensen, Dr. Jörg Kahre (Cognis GmbH)
Testing foam using the Rotor Foam Method is a foam testing method which gives results
on the foaming properties of surfactants. Besides classic parameters, like foam
volume and foam stability, this method can deliver results concerning foamability. All
these parameters are important properties of foam which are of interest to the end
user of body care products.
Generating foam from water based solutions of surfactants can be seen as bringing
air into the solution by means of friction at a narrow gap. This model can be used
for the washing of skin and hair. Using this model a rotor was developed which
is especially suitable for testing the foam kinetics of water based surfactant
solutions as used in body care products.
By variation of the test conditions, such as the concentration of the surfactant,
the stirring speed and the application time, it is possible to find a correlation
with in-vivo methods such as the half-side test at the hair studio. This is important
for the development of products because the development can take place much faster.
A fast, efficient and reliable test procedure can be utilized resulting
from the automatic measurement, the software enhanced automatic test result analysis
and easy plotting of the readings.
By using this patented Rotor Foam Method test results become comparable. This is
of advantage for use in various industries and institutions, and will make the Rotor
Foam Method popular in a wide range of applications.
